Graphic Novels To Supplement Your Comic Book Movie Addiciton

With a plethora of comic book movies due out this year, the nerd-verse is a very exciting place to be in 2016. If, like me, you are itching with anticipation, I’m going to help you out. Below you will find the most-anticipated comic book movies of 2016, each with two graphic novels/collected story arcs to tie you in and get you ready for the big screen releases.

Deadpool

deadpool movie

Release Date: February 12

Background: Deadpool was actually created as a straight rip-off of DC Comics’ Deathstroke (Slade Wilson), but has gathered a massive cult following, growing more popular than Deathstroke ever was. The Merc With a Mouth, as e’s commonly referred to as, has made a movie appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it was so god-awful that it took years and tons of fan support for Fox to give the green light on a solo movie.

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, TJ Miller, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, Gina Carano

Synopsis of the Film: This is, by all accounts, an origin story. Wade Wilson has terminal cancer, and a mysterious gentlemen has offered for him to undergo a procedure that will cure him of cancer and give him powers – except, it’s not about making him a superhero; it’s about making him a weapon… a Weapon X, perhaps. That goes horribly and he spends the film finding out who he really is and killing lots of bad guys.

Merc With a Mouth

CollectingDeadpool: Merc With A Mouth #1-13, Lady Deadpool #1
Creative Team
: Victor Gischler, Mary Choi (writer), Bong Dazo, Kyle Baker, Matteo Scalera, Ken Lashley (artists)
Release Date: January 2014
Synopsis: Part of Deadpool’s notoriety is due to his ability to break the fourth wall and have metacognition about his words, often making off-hand references about pop culture icons, movies, and characters. Merc With A Mouth takes that charm and turns it up to 100; each of the covers to the individual issues borrowing their theme from a famous pop culture movie. With Fox having so many titles at their disposal, it’s very likely we’ll see Wade drop some references to other work.

Deadpool vol 3: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

CollectingDeadpool #13-19
Creative Team
: Gerry Duggan (writer), Brian Posehn (artist)
Release Date: January 2014
Synopsis: This volume is sort of a stand-alone in the Marvel NOW! continuity where Deadpool has word that the Weapon X program has revamped and is now trying to replicate his procedure with clones of various mutants. It’s very Nazi mad sciency, but this is one of the few arcs of his I can think of that combines his wit and humor with genuine feelings. Also, Gerry Duggan is the best Deadpool writer of all time – sorry, Liefield.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

batman-v-superman-dawn-of-justice-logo

Release Date: March 25th

Background: In all their 75+ years of existing in the same universe, the Man of Tomorrow and the Caped Crusader have never appeared in a major film together, even though they’ve chummed it up in comic books and animated features fairly extensively the last 20 or so years. Giving the juggernaut characters their own movie seemed like the only feasible way to keep up with the MCU.

Starring: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Gal Gadot

Synopsis of the Film: After a successful run at Man of Steel, Superman is back to star in co-star in appear in a second film that he will share the spotlight in with Batman – as well Lex Luthor, Wonder Woman, and a horde of other Leaguers. First-time meetings between Bats and Supes are always skeptical, but the idea of using the events of Man of Steel as a sort of DCU 9/11 for Bruce Wayne was a perfect set-up.

Supplemental Reading:

Batman v Superman is my most anticipated movie (I just love the Dark Knight himself), so I’ll throw you a freebie. In my last article, I stated you are crazy if you haven’t read Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, and I stand by that. With the obvious parallels found in the trailer new film, it is a book that should and must be read.

Captain America: Civil War

images

Release Date: May 6th

Background: It’s no secret that the last Avengers movie didn’t create quite the buzz that the original did. Age of Ultron ended on a good note thematically, but the drama surrounding the film with Joss Whedon and the army of “militant feminists” instead of the great performances. For this one, the MCU will use one of its most critically-acclaimed stories as the plot, so expect more blockbuster goodness.

Starring: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Chadwick Boseman, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Paul Rudd

Synopsis of the Film: If you thought Avengers: Age of Ultron was overwhelming, get ready for Civil WarCaptain America: Civil War will pit blue against red, as well as introduce several new characters to the MCU, some slated to get their own solo films in the upcoming years. More importantly, it sidesteps the whole “kill a schoolbus full of children” thing and replaces it will a more palatable resolution to Winter Soldier instead.

X-Men: Apocalypse

X-MEN-APOCALYPSE-9

Release Date: May 27th

Background: X-Men movies haven’t been really good since X-Men 2, but that hasn’t stopped Fox from continually rebooting. Several terrible Wolverine films later, and we got First Class. While it was a bit jumbled, it became a solid platform to launch the new franchise. That’s all fine and dandy when the X-Men are fighting themselves, but what happens when they have to go against a god?

Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn

Synopsis of the Film: A new legion (ha, no pun intended X-fans) of mutants have gathered under Charles Xavier’s guidance – although, they won’t be new to fans of the comic books. It’s time for a real villain. Enter, Ivan Ooze Apocalypse. He’s kind of a big deal, and he wants mutants to obliterate humankind with the help of the mutants. This doesn’t go over well with the X-Men.

tmnt2

Release Date: June 3rd

Background: TMNT fans don’t realize how lucky they are. Instead of fading into total obscurity like they, for all logic, should have, the Heroes in a Half-Shell have survived and thrived over three decades of reboots, relaunches, and rebranding. This latest franchise, one stamped with the Michael Bay seal of “meh,” was a big production, but could definitely use some more turtle action the next time around.

Synopsis of the Film: Finally, a movie where the Shredder isn’t the bad guy! The next TMNT film is not JUST going to feature Shredder, but long-time fan favorites Bebop and Rocksteady. Suicide Squad
hqdefault

Release Date: August 5th

Background: Call it the poor man’s Avengers, but Suicide Squad is a whole other flavor of ensemble superhero film. All the gripes of “too soon!” concerning Jared Leto’s Joker have died down after a trailer dropped, while super-casting decisions to add Margot Robbie – arguably one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood – as the looney Harley Quinn. Throw in Batman to the mix, and you’ve got a party.

Starring: Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, Joel Kinnaman, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Viola Davis

Synopsis of the Film: A lot of the plot of Suicide Squad has been kept kinda under wraps (unlike SOME DC movie I know…), but here’s what we know about the team: they are a group of criminals due for the death sentence. However, due to their “skills,” they are given a choice to go on covert operations for Amanda Waller… well, they are heartily persuaded, usually by way of explosive neck collars. They do not like each other. I’m curious to see who is even going to make it out alive.
